Your Key Ability Score, as a Thaumaturge, is Charisma. That means you definitely want a +4 in Charisma, from character creation. You could go with the anti-ghost or undead archetypes (there's several, such as Undead Slayer). Unfortunately Exorcist conflicts with Thaumaturge's very full hands, but if you play a ancestry with an unarmed attack you could pull it off if you want to.Ranged Thaumaturge is Nuts! Playtest. Looking at the Weapon implement, I noticed the attack of opportunity it grants works with ranged weapons against targets up to 10 feet away. This lets a ranged thaumaturge get a free attack whenever the subject of their esoteric antithesis approaches them. Not only that, but most of thaumaturge's abilities ...You may not wield a 2handed weapon. You may wield a single, one handed weapon, (this includes wielding a single free hand weapon) and combine that with your esoterica, your Implements, and even manipulate your scrolls (scroll Thauma), all with your 'spare hand'. Advice. My idea for my first PF2e character is a Thaumaturge "master of mystic arts" who uses their knowledge to fight monsters and aid their allies. However I am going for more of a redeemer vibe as someone who empathises with creatures that others might regard as inherently evil. As part of this my own character will have a Tiefling ancestry ...

Luckily level 2 thaumaturge feats are not too exciting. As for combat the goal is to be mid/backline with a hand crossbow meaning the level 1 feat to reload is a must. As to how it feels to play, so far not bad. It is really fun making up whatever esoteric weakness fits. Dedication if pursued to the end gives you 1 or 2 spell slots of each level at a few levels behind pace, which works better for buff/utility spells than spell attacks and save or suck. The basic process involves picking your martial first, then your spellcasting dedication second. I'd recommend fighter base. For a thaumaturge, dipping into gunslinger can be interesting because fakeout + the gauntlet bow opens up easy aid reactions.
