If you have active shared exp on in the options everyone recieves the exact same amount of exp regardless of party size. If you have it off active party members divide it evenly meaning if you have less then 6 you get more. Shared Exp on. Ex: Everyone (including non active) gets 10 exp for the kill or skill check. Sure, you can min-max a better alchemist as a mercenary, and you'd make him a Grenadier archetype if you wanted an even better bomber, but Jubilost is very, very, powerful mechanically. There is a lot more variety and cool minor effects sprinkled over the game when compared to KM and that is just more fun. WotR has a lot more reactivity to your race, class and choices when compared to Kingmaker and that is pretty fun. The visuals in WotR are definetly a step above KM, i doubt anyone would deny it.

This is going to be a divided topic. I like the companions for both, but generally prefer Kingmaker companions. Arushalae, Nenio, and Ember are all awesome, and to me, much more interesting than companions like Jubilost, Linzi or Amiri.
