Once you get access to better materials and the later machines for abilities like grading, silent gear gets a bit more relevant again and actually stands its ground. It's not too bad early on too since it's super easy to do repairs, and to get 13.5+ damage unenchanted weapons and instamine tools before you ever settle down.
