This also depends on your NGU levels, for the ones that apply to challenges (power, augments, wandoos and gold) around 5K levels is enough for what I mentioned above. No equipment (NEC) is a good one to do as well, but at 5K challenge NGUs it might still be a bit long.

Maybe you forgot to kill anything in adventure mode after reset before turning off your game so your income was 0. Augments and time machine require gold to progress, so if your income was 0 you couldn't gain anything.
