DMU and more recent precons are definitely better put together. I wouldn't go earlier. The brother's war precons are good. Aggro and mishra is more nuanced. The 40k precons are all great but it out of stock that's a problem. The Phyrexia ones might be a bit weaker, but I've had a lot of fun playing them stock.

The 40K precons are all good, but the Necron one is incredibly cohesive and plays well right out of the box. I actually just reverted mine back to its original state to use in vanilla precon games. Owning both it and the Tyrannid deck, I'd recommend Necrons—but I'm also biased toward black and the necrons' design.
